It all started in 1990 with the original baked masterpiece, Cinnamon Walnut Coffee Cake. Yes, it’s true, there really was a legendary grandma who started baking coffee cakes by hand in a 250 square foot bakery in Newton, Massachusetts. Word of mouth helped the business grow. Customers came from all over to buy the cakes; warm, just out of the oven. But this grandma is not actually the grandmother of current owner Robert Katz. Bob bought the company from its founder, who was the “real” grandson. Over the years Robert Katz, an entrepreneurial visionary, has expanded the business from a well–kept local secret to a multi–million dollar corporation, all based on his belief that the product was exceptional.
The company is now headquartered in Boston. The product is still mouthwatering and tastes homemade. Grandma’s of New England is the original. And, with each cake comes a guarantee to be the best coffee cake you have ever eaten. Impressive!
The cakes are available in numerous varieties, some even in lower fat versions. Best sellers include the original (and still #1) Cinnamon Walnut, Granny Smith Apple, Cape Cod Cranberry and Cappuccino – and best of all, the cakes can be shipped right to your door. They are now sent all over the world, including shipments to our troops overseas.
My Grandma’s of New England uses all natural ingredients with no trans–fats or artificial flavorings, colors or preservatives. The cake ingredients include pure bourbon vanilla from Madagascar, fresh farm eggs, cultured sour cream, soured naturally, and Mariani walnuts from Northern California orchards.
We tasted the original Cinnamon Walnut Coffee Cake, the one that started an industry. It was moist, rich, with a fresh walnutty–cinnamon filling, and we deem it truly delectable. We also enjoyed Lemon Poppy, a newer flavor for Grandma’s. The cake had a deep citrus flavor with poppy seeds throughout—perfect with our latte. On our bucket list, or shall say our coffee cake wish list—a tasting of Granny Smith Apple and Cape Cod Cranberry.
All Grandma’s cakes are certified kosher dairy by the OK. They come packaged with a special freezer bag, so they can be frozen for up to six months and are available in two sizes. Now how can you resist?
